Back up a Windows PC to a Synology NAS

MomentBackup writes to a Synology NAS through SMB, the same file-sharing method used by Windows File Explorer. No Synology package is needed.

1. Create the shared folder in DSM

In DSM, open Control Panel → Shared Folder. Choose Create → Create Shared Folder and name it Backups. Give a normal NAS user read and write access. Synology’s Windows sharing guide shows the current folder and permission screens.

Next, open Control Panel → File Services → SMB. Turn on Enable SMB service and apply the change. Synology recommends SMB2 or SMB3 for current Windows PCs. Leave guest access off, and do not expose SMB directly to the internet.

2. Add the NAS in MomentBackup

During first setup, choose Network drive → Connect a share…. Later, use Destinations → Add a place → Network share.

Use either address style:

  • \\DiskStation\Backups
  • smb://DiskStation/Backups

Replace DiskStation if your NAS uses another name. Enter the Synology username and password, then connect. Finish with Start protecting if this is first setup. MomentBackup stores the credential in Windows Credential Manager.

Encryption is optional. If you turn it on, keep the recovery key somewhere other than this PC or NAS.

3. Check the result

Run the first File History backup and wait for it to complete.

Then open Backup Explorer and restore one small file to a new folder. Open that copy before you call the setup done.

If MomentBackup cannot connect, paste the same UNC address into File Explorer. A Windows sign-in prompt or access error there usually points to the DSM user or shared-folder permission. For a second layer, read Back up multiple computers to one NAS.
