Back up a Windows PC to a QNAP NAS

A QNAP NAS works as a normal network destination. MomentBackup does not need a QNAP add-on or an administrator login to the NAS.

1. Make a backup share in QTS

Open File Station and create a shared folder called Backups. QNAP’s shared-folder guide shows the current QTS 5.2 steps.

Give a normal NAS user read and write access to that folder. Do not allow guest access. Under Control Panel → Network & File Services → Win/Mac/NFS/WebDAV → Microsoft Networking, make sure SMB is enabled. Keep a modern SMB version; do not turn on SMB1 for this.

Keep SMB inside your local network. Do not forward its ports through your router.

2. Connect MomentBackup

During first setup, choose Network drive, then Connect a share…. If MomentBackup is already set up, open Destinations, choose Add a place, then choose Network share.

Enter either form of the share address:

  • \\QNAP-name\Backups
  • smb://QNAP-name/Backups

Enter the NAS username and password, then connect. Finish with Start protecting if this is first setup. Windows keeps the saved credential in Windows Credential Manager rather than a plain settings file.

Choose whether to encrypt the backup. If encryption is on, save the recovery key away from this PC and NAS.

3. Run one backup and one restore

Start the first File History backup and wait for it to finish.

Open Backup Explorer, pick one small file, and restore it to a new folder. Open the restored file. That checks the whole path, not just the backup status.

If the connection fails, open the same \\QNAP-name\Backups address in File Explorer. Fix the NAS name, permission, or password there first, then reconnect in MomentBackup. See Choosing a destination for the trade-offs between a NAS, an external drive, and cloud storage.
