Back up a Windows PC to an ASUSTOR NAS

MomentBackup uses a normal SMB shared folder on ADM. You do not need an App Central package or a NAS administrator account.

1. Create the shared folder in ADM

Open Services → SMB, turn on Enable SMB, and apply the change. Use SMB2 or SMB3. ASUSTOR’s SMB guide shows the current settings.

Next, open Access Control → Shared Folders and choose Add. Name the folder Backups, then give a normal NAS user read and write access. Do not use the built-in Public folder. Leave guest access off, and do not expose SMB directly to the internet.

2. Add the NAS in MomentBackup

During first setup, choose Network drive → Connect a share…. Later, use Destinations → Add a place → Network share.

Use either address style:

  • \\ASUSTOR-name\Backups
  • smb://ASUSTOR-name/Backups

You can use the NAS IP address instead of its name. Enter the NAS username and password, then connect. Finish with Start protecting if this is first setup. MomentBackup stores the credential in Windows Credential Manager.

Encryption is optional. If you turn it on, keep the recovery key somewhere other than this PC or NAS.

3. Check the result

Run the first File History backup and wait for it to complete.

Then open Backup Explorer and restore one small file to a new folder. Open the restored copy before you call the setup done.

If MomentBackup cannot connect, paste the same \\ASUSTOR-name\Backups address into File Explorer. Fix any name, password, or folder-permission error there, then reconnect in MomentBackup. For another copy of important files, read Back up multiple computers to one NAS.
