MomentBackup vs built-in Mac backup
The backup built into macOS saves file history and supports whole-computer recovery. MomentBackup saves its own file history across Windows, macOS, and Linux. It can also keep an off-site copy with S3 Object Lock where supported.

MomentBackup features
- File History on Windows, macOS, and Linux. Browse saved versions by date on each supported computer.
- An off-site copy protected from rewrites. A local backup drive can be encrypted or wiped by ransomware, and it offers no off-site option. With a provider and bucket that support S3 Object Lock, MomentBackup can keep an immutable copy that rejects early deletion.
- Restores you can check. MomentBackup verifies backups automatically. For local and mounted backups, it can also run a safe restore drill and show when a real restore last worked.
- Your keys, portable. End-to-end encryption with a recovery key you hold; restore on another supported computer. Local or mounted backups can be restored offline. Restores are never license-gated.
- Choose your File History storage. Local disk, NAS, or an S3-compatible bucket. It can use the same NAS share as the built-in Mac backup, in its own folder.
- Whole-computer recovery on Windows. System images on a local or external drive, or a connected NAS, and whole-machine restore to a replacement drive.

Use macOS Recovery for whole-computer recovery on a Mac. MomentBackup provides separate File History backups, optional encryption, and an optional off-site copy. It does not monitor the built-in Mac backup.
